PCF3 Update…End of Year Exhibition, Design Team

Victoria Burch

PCF3 Wk3 Mentoring the 2nd Years - Exhibition brochure

Following Louise, Abi and Susan’s first critique from the group at the exhibition meeting, we met up at our usual time on Wednesday morning to set about making amendments. The girls took on board all of the comments received from the group and produced new layouts ready for viewing at the next meeting.

Each of us also agreed to get two quotes for printing the brochure;

· One 20pp 170gsm, with a 4pp cover in heavier stock - 300gsm, total page count 24.

· One 28pp 170gsm, with a 4pp cover in heavier stock - 300gsm, total page count 32 (allowing a spread per artist).

This week, after amending the layouts seen by the exhibition team, the girls mainly worked on designing their business cards using InDesign. We focused on colour and adding colour swatches, as well as ‘planning up’ for printing - using crop marks, bleed and trimming correctly. This involved them learning how to make pdfs from InDesign and also measuring out the page to make the most of the space.

We have taken the layouts as far as we can and following the latest amends, all that remains to do is put the final layout proofs to a group vote at the next exhibition meeting. This week the girls focused on type setting ads.

The ads had to follow the branding of each of the individual businesses buying advertising in the brochure, with the emphasis on specific typefaces and spacing. They completed all of the tasks and consequently the adverts were signed off. They also put together a flat plan of adverts sold for the Exhibition notice board.

I collated the artist statements from both 2nd & third years, chased the late submitters, and sent to the tutors.

Here is the layout for advertising in the brochure.

Our next exhibition design team meeting will be Wednesday 27th March - following receipt of the profile pics, artists statements and artworks on Tuesday 27th March. On this Wednesday, we begin the proper layout for the brochure, our scheduled first proof will be Tuesday 23rd April. Currently we are waiting for confirmation on cost of printing (Louise), advertising sales for the last page of advertising, (Tam & Alfie), From Cover design for the rest of the exhibition (Steve).
