SP3 Final Presentation; Filming update – review of technical issues.

Victoria Burch

Updated: Jan 18, 2019

Having complete the afternoon’s filming, a total of nine movies were shot, three are useable but need some editing with sound. There were a couple of false starts, due to people walking through to use the toilet – even though there was a sign on the door asking people to use the facilities at the gym.

Critique took place after each movie and improvements were made along the way which included changing the stage layout to get rid of the light coming in through the back window.

The light borrowed from Steve didn’t work and he didn’t have another or another bulb, so we lost our spot light which was originally planned for the dancer – this made the stage seem very dark with only one light that worked – several adjustments were made to try and improve this.

There were two songs originally chosen. The first song relevant to the dancer proved to hard too sing for me - it had sounded fine singing along to the track in the car. Even though bad singing was intentional, my voice kept cracking to the point of disappearing altogether. The second choice of song proved to be easier and was also relevant to the theme of the film in terms of the story of the dancer.

The first movie shot was a rehearsal, singing along to the original song by Abba - a way to warm up and get a feel for how the dancer was going to perform. The subsequent movies shot used a karaoke feed from the laptop.

Reviewing all the footage, and if I were to shoot at a location again, I would plan it over two days; one for ironing out the technical issues and one for actually filming – I can see why film makers use a studio.  This would also provide more opportunity to review the footage over night and critique thoroughly before making the final film.

In terms of the technical elements of the film; sound and light, I am a little disappointed, due to all the effort with the technical side in preparation to make the film.

The performance of the dancer was superb, and captured exactly what I wanted to portray in the film - in terms of my own performance I feel I was a little subdued - not intentional at the time - we had a great time making the work, it just reads that way in the final version. I will update once editing has taken place...
