SP3 Sean Scully

Victoria Burch

When first I encountered this work (two years ago) on a walk from Fenchurch Street to Leadenhall Street to catch a bus to the West end, little did I know this was the sculptural work of a painter. I assumed on sight of the piece, that whomever had made the work was entirely about 3d work. I remember looking up the artist on the Sculpture in the City website and totally relating to the piece and its link to seascape horizons.

Having watched the BB2 program on Sean Scully on Saturday night, I am now a big fan of this artist as a painter also. His no nonsense approach was refreshing to say the least, and I very much look forward to the upcoming exhibition at the National Gallery, on Saturday 13thApril. What also inspires me about this artist, is his love for Van Gogh and Giorgio Morandi – two artists that I also enjoy.

What’s clear about Scully is that he uses colour to identify objects in his work, a minimal colour palette to reflect the subject matter – which he makes reference to as elements his past before the beginning of his career. This minimal colour palette can also be seen in the muted tones of Giorgio Morandi and his paintings of objects – these attributes are something I may also distil for use in my own practice.

Furthermore, at a recent group show named after the essay written by Scully; Resistance and Persistence, several artists showcased work in the spirit of Morandi and Scully which has proved inspirational as an idea for my own end of year show display. Once having seen the show I will blog again…
