Sean Scully’s Sun Star exhibition was relatively smaller than I'd expected, that’s not to say the content of the show wasn’t excellent and it was free to get in which was an added bonus. Having watched the Arena programme on his work, I felt I was viewing the show somewhat informed, but what I didn’t realise was how much printmaking has played a role in how he generates work. The smaller printed samples were placed along side the larger work and this inspired me to try smaller pieces for my larger paintings.
I have also cast more separate objects (which need further work) and also experimented with some abstract colour samples using collage as a surface on which to paint, pastel and further collage onto, these will be used to test out one example in the space I have chosen.
Inspired by Scully’s work, this is an attempt to separate the colour of my everyday objects with that of the object itself and present in an abstract way. An option I’ve thought about is to display both colour painting/collage and cast of the object together.
Initially I tried working in the sketchbook, but it seemed to take me away from what I had decided to use already, the third image shows a combination of my practice and the idea from Scully's work, following which I got a bit carried away with the tissue paper. The 'shit pineapple' as I have called it is only a test piece, should I decide after visiting the space and experimenting that I am going to paint the actual food stuffs, I will create an alternative.
I ve also read the Resistance and Persistence Essay about Giorgio Morandi by Sean Scully, I have also ordered his book of essays. An exhibition at the Ingleby gallery based on the ideas of Scully and his Morandi essay, has also proved inspirational.
Other reading has included; Looking at the Overlooked by Norman Bryson, which includes the ideas of Meglography and Rhopography (everyday objects). What happens when I test my ideas out in the space will hopefully throw up more solutions and allow me to at last nail my final decision for the show.
